Materials

Clay or concrete? Start with the material.

Similar silhouettes can hide very different products. Compare the actual tile, complete roof system, and installer before choosing.

Clay roof tile

Clay tiles are formed and fired in a kiln. Their surface may be natural terracotta, a colored finish, or a glaze. Barrel, interlocking and flat profiles can all be made from clay; shape alone does not identify the material.

Concrete roof tile

Concrete roof tiles are molded products available in a range of profiles and colors. Review the selected manufacturer’s product information for weight, coverage, finish, accessories and installation requirements.

Compare complete proposals

Ask each roofer to name the manufacturer, profile, color and installation system. Compare underlayment, flashing, deck work, attachment, access and disposal on the same basis. A tile-only price leaves major project costs unanswered.

Your next step

Get physical samples and view a complete roof in the proposed blend. Ask the contractor to confirm structural suitability and local product acceptance before you order.
