Preservation

Preserve the character. Repair with care.

Historic clay tile roofs often help define a building. An informed assessment can distinguish repairable problems from work that needs a larger intervention.

Document what is there

Record the profile, color blend, layout, decorative details and existing repairs. Look for maker’s marks on loose tiles already safely accessible. Keep photographs and sample records as part of the building’s history.

Assess before replacing

Ask a specialist to examine the tiles, attachments, flashing and supporting assembly. Deteriorated flashings or fasteners do not automatically mean all sound tiles must be discarded.

Find compatible replacements

Match dimensions, profile and the way pieces fit together, as well as appearance. Salvaged or newly manufactured pieces may be options, but compatibility must be checked. Retain usable original material where appropriate.

Plan skilled work

Select a roofer with comparable tile preservation projects. For designated properties, coordinate the proposed work with the relevant preservation authority before changes are made.
