Inventory the silhouette from several views
Photograph each ridge end, hip starter, junction and finial from positions that show its shape and relation to the roof. Number recurring forms and record missing or visibly altered pieces. NPS identifies specialty tiles as part of the historic roof’s character. A close view records detail; a wider view explains the scale and placement that make that detail meaningful.
Distinguish repeating trim from unique ornament
Manufacturers offer both standard trim families and individually shaped decorative pieces. Ludowici’s decorative range includes hip starters and custom historic accessories. Identify which parts repeat and which are unique to the building before seeking replacements. A replacement for one terminal may need a different form from the piece at a superficially similar junction elsewhere on the roof.
Compare the whole trim family
Ludowici illustrates rounded, V-shaped and other hip-and-ridge groups, each producing a different visual finish. When reviewing a proposed replacement, compare its relationship to adjoining field tile and neighboring trim. A compatible color alone is insufficient. Record the profile and junction form so a generic ridge piece does not inadvertently flatten or enlarge the historic roofline.
Retain evidence for accurate reproduction
Keep fragments, measured photographs and drawings associated with their original location. Ludowici describes custom molds and textures developed from samples or drawings. Where a complete original is unavailable, distinguish documented reconstruction from a new design, and mark uncertainty before commissioning a prominent replacement.
Plan handling around the individual object
Fragile special shapes need protection and identification through removal, storage and return. GSA calls for special fittings matching adjacent material and finish and for storage that minimizes handling. Ask the project team to record whether each piece will remain, be conserved or be replicated, and preserve a final location schedule for future care of the roof.
