Planning

Organize a change from shingles to tile.

A material change brings several decisions together. Organize them in a sequence so structural review, roof details, purchasing and construction all describe the same proposed roof.

Define the proposed assembly

Begin with the exact tile product and a preliminary description of the complete roof assembly. Give that information to the professionals reviewing the building. If the product changes later, ask which earlier decisions need to be checked again. A review based on an unnamed “lightweight tile” leaves too much uncertainty for ordering and scheduling.

Put feasibility ahead of purchasing

Have structural suitability, roof geometry and project requirements resolved before releasing the main material order. Record any required reinforcement or deck work as its own scope item. Assign responsibility for design information and local submissions. The goal is a coordinated project package that the roofer, supplier and owner can all identify by date.

Review everything meeting the roof

Use photographs to list chimneys, skylights, walls, gutters and equipment that will remain. Ask the project team whether the proposed roof build-up changes any transition or creates additional work for another trade. Have those interfaces reviewed together. This is a coordination exercise for qualified professionals, not a request for the owner to design flashings.

Build the schedule around dependencies

List the decisions and activities that must happen before removal starts: product approval, required reviews, material availability, access arrangements and any preliminary repairs. Assign a named contact to each. Confirm whether specialty fittings and field tiles arrive together. Keep the removal date provisional until the team has checked that the planned sequence is achievable.

Record what actually changed

At handover, obtain the final product identification, the agreed structural work record, photographs supplied by the contractor and applicable inspection documents. Note changes from the original proposal. Store the old roof description with the new records; a future owner should be able to understand when the building changed from shingles to tile and what accompanied that conversion.
