Understand the two roles
Roman-style roof tile uses a pan-and-cover arrangement, often with relatively flat pans and raised covers over their side joints. The visible rhythm comes from both components. The exact pan shape, cover curvature and method of support belong to the particular product; do not assume an ancient or regional label defines a modern installation detail.
Record components separately
When documenting an existing roof, identify field pans, field covers, starters, terminations and ridge pieces separately. Record dimensions and distinctive underside marks where samples are already safely available. Photographs of a complete eave are especially useful because they show the relationship between pieces. A single loose cover cannot establish the full roof layout.
Check the transitions
A proposed replacement needs to work at valleys, changes in pitch, roof edges and intersections as well as in an open field. Ask for drawings or a mockup of those transitions. Matching the surface color alone will not resolve differences in the pan width or cover bearing. Have a tile specialist review compatibility and the project’s attachment requirements before accepting a substitution.
