Installation

Separate trim support, attachment and weather protection.

Hip and ridge pieces finish the roof visually, but their support, resistance to movement and control of wind-driven moisture involve different details. Review all three when comparing proposed systems.

Start with the correct trim family

Confirm the hip and ridge pieces, starters, ends and junction fittings that belong with the selected field tile. A trim piece must suit the geometry as well as the color. Ludowici’s bonnet-hip prototype, for example, has specific relationships to adjoining slopes and field joints. Discuss special intersections before ordering so site improvisation does not become the default design.

Show what holds the trim

Ask the installer to show the support beneath the trim and how it connects to the roof. A prototype V-hip detail includes supporting stringers and required fasteners in addition to weather protection. Avoid judging attachment from the visible finish alone. Request a representative photograph before the trim closes the connection, especially where several hips meet a ridge.

Specify the weather-blocking role

Weather blocking helps keep wind-driven moisture from entering openings between field tiles, trim and flashings. It must be compatible with the profile and chosen assembly. Products that look like mortar do not necessarily provide structural attachment: Ludowici explicitly states that its Flexim product does not replace mechanical fastening. Have the proposal identify each product’s intended role without relying on a general label.

Coordinate a vented ridge as a system

A vented ridge needs a deliberate airflow opening, weather-resistant flashing and the corresponding cap and support arrangement. It cannot be created simply by omitting a closure, or preserved if another trade fills the passage. Ask who verifies the vent detail and who reviews the final intersection with hips, ridge ends and nearby equipment before the roof is considered complete.
