Planning

Check the structure before changing materials.

A change to clay or concrete tile is a building decision as well as a design choice.

Use the actual product weight

Obtain the weight per installed square from the manufacturer. Tile size, profile and construction vary; a generic material weight is not a structural assessment. Include accessories and the rest of the roof assembly.

Review the existing building

Ask a qualified design professional to assess the roof framing and its support when the project requires it. Existing damage, alterations and unusual spans can affect the answer.

Include local design loads

The selected roof assembly must be considered with the loads applicable to the building. Product selection alone does not establish that the structure can support a change.

Before ordering

Keep the written structural recommendation with the project documents. Ask the contractor to coordinate any required repairs or reinforcement before the tile arrives.
