A standard for the tile material
ASTM C1167 is a specification for clay roof tiles. Its published scope concerns the manufactured units, rather than serving as a complete set of installation details for every building. Refer to the edition required by the project or approval. The public abstract is useful for identifying scope, but detailed requirements must be checked in an authorized copy of the standard.
A roof is an assembly
Material compliance alone does not specify the deck, underlayment, flashing, attachment, edge details or the building’s structural capacity. A compliant tile can still be installed in an unsuitable assembly. Collect the applicable manufacturer instructions and local approval requirements, and have the responsible professional resolve conflicts or missing conditions before construction.
Keep evidence traceable
Ask the supplier to connect the compliance statement to the exact product being offered, not merely to a company name. Include document dates and any limitations in the submittal. If a substitute is proposed, compare its material documentation and its assembly requirements separately. Written review of both prevents a visually similar tile from entering a project with unexamined fastening or layout changes.
