Identify the scope of the declaration
An environmental product declaration reports defined environmental information for a stated product or group. Begin with the covered products, declared unit, geography, publication date and validity period. Confirm that the proposed tile falls within that scope. A declaration for one manufacturer or product family does not automatically describe all clay roof tile.
Compare like with like
Check the life-cycle stages and assumptions included before comparing values. A figure per unit mass is not directly equivalent to one per installed roof area. Coverage, accessories, transport, service-life assumptions and replacement scenarios can affect a project comparison. Ask the designer or sustainability consultant to explain any conversions and exclusions used.
Use the information alongside design decisions
An environmental declaration does not replace structural, durability or installation review. Keep the declared product, the actual specification and the quantity estimate aligned. If the supply source changes, check whether the original declaration still applies. Present the supported findings and their limits rather than describing a roof as universally best or impact-free on the basis of one document.
